Meihua - t = (x + 2) hr; d = 50 km; m = (a - 5) km/h [let m = Meihua's speed and a = Ailin's speed]
Ailin - t = x hr; d = 40 km; a km/h [a = Ailin's speed]

speed = distance / time

your working as I remembered;
50/(x + 2) + 5 = 40/x
your equation is correct but was based on speed where your variable x represents time. However the question wanted you to calculate the speed. So you should use the following equation that is based on time with variable a that represents Ailin's speed.

50/(a - 5) - 2 = 40/a

you will reach this quadratic equation

-2a(square) + 20a + 200 = 0

you need to use the quadratic formula to solve the above equation

a = {-20 +- squareroot[20square - 4(-2)(200)]} / -4

the squareroot is 44.72 - you need calculator or squareroot table to get this.

finally you will arrive with the following answers

a = -6.18 or 16.18

-6.18 is not acceptable for speed as it was negative valued

So Ailin's speed is 16.18 km/h
Meihua's speed = Ailin's speed - 5 therefore 11.18 km/h

Let the number of cows = x.
If we have 160 more cows than sheep, then the number of sheep is x - 160.

After selling off 25% of the cows, the farmer is left with 75% of the cows. So the number of cows left after the fair will be 75% multiple with x.

After selling 2 fifth of the sheeps, the farmer is left with 3 fifth of the sheeps. So the number of sheeps left after the fair will be 3/5 multiple with (x - 160).

If after the fair the farmer still has 156 more cows then sheeps, then the following equation can be built.
x times 75% = (3/5 times (x - 160)) + 156

By changing 75% into 3/4 you will get x = 400.

Therefore the farmer has 400 cows in the beginning.

Jr 2 Science – 2010 Final Exam Required Syllabus

Tip 1 – Energy
1.1) Where does energy come from? (UEC Chapter 13 – pg 141)
       Know the sources of exhaustible energy as well as forms of renewable energy.
1.2) Forms of energy (UEC Chapter 1 – pg 3)
       Able to differentiate between chemical energy, kinetic energy and potential energies (gravitational and   elastic). Also need to understand how energy changes forms.
1.3) Heat
     1.3.1) Understand thermal expansion (UEC Chapter 4 – pg 34)
               Able to describe expansion of solid, liquid and gas. Also able to differentiate between the three types of expansion.
     1.3.2) Heat transfer (UEC chapter 5 – pg 43)
               Understand conduction, convection and radiation of heat as well as able to differentiating these three.
     1.3.3) Heat energy, temperature and quantity of heat (UEC Chapter 3 –pg 21)
               Need to understand Celsius and Kelvin thermometric scales as well as Mercury and Alcohol thermometers. Also need to understand specific heat capacity and its related calculations (pg 29 and pg 30). However, the specific heat capacity of substances does not need to be memorised.
     1.3.4) Latent Heat (UEC Chapter 6 – pg 57 and 61)
               Need to differentiate between latent heat of fusion and latent heat of vaporisation. Also able to relate to specific heat capacity as in (1.3.3) to determine the heat quantity involving changing of states (Example 6.2 – pg 61).

       The following terminologies are crucial for this section.
       Fusion, solidification, vaporisation, evaporation, boiling, liquefaction, sublimation

Tip 2 – Water

       From physical characteristics of water to effects of impurities to composition of water to evaporation and boiling of water needed to be understood (pg 3 – pg 12).

Tip 6 - Biology
This section is diagram-based and serves as revisions so as to be more prepared for Jr 3 Science next year. All you need is to be able to label the following diagrams correctly.
 Respiratory system of human (Figure 23.5 – UEC pg 253)
 External and internal structure of human heart (Figure 24.1 and 24.2 UEC pg 259 and pg 260)
 Urinary system of human (Figure 25.1 UEC pg 270)
 Structure of Kidney (Figure 25.2 UEC pg 271)


This list of exam tips is quite exhaustive. Use it as a check list to ensure all needed knowledge are in your grey matter before you set foot into the exam room. Though the list looks long and a bit intimidating, it is actually quite basic. If you know most of what is in this list, you sure get flying colours on your science exam. Jr 1 Mathematics – 2010 Final Exam Required Syllabus

Things that you MUST know for this coming exam from each chapter are as follow;


Chapter 8:
a) Value of Algebraic Expression (pg 149)
Ex 8b (pg 151) is extremely helpful. Make sure you know how to solve questions like these.
b) Arithmetical Operations in Algebra (pg 152 to pg 158 – emphasis is on pg 157 and pg 158)
Ex 8e (pg 159) is a MUST.

Chapter 9:
a) Solving linear equations with one variable (pg 167)
Ex 9c, 9d, 9e and 9f are good for revisions. Exam questions however, are somewhat similar to Q4 of Rev Ex 9h (pg 180)
b) Word problems involving linear equation with one variable (pg 173)
Go through all the examples from pg 173 to pg 175. All exam questions are based on these examples. Ex 9g (pg 176) can be a good source for revision. Please note that the questions in Ex 9g can roughly be divided into 5 groups: Q1 to Q13, Q14 to Q19, Q20 to Q29, Q30 to Q37 and Q38 to Q54. Make sure you attempt some questions from each groups.

Chapter 10:
a) Knowing the names of plane figures and solid figures (pg 183)
b) Able to identify faces, edges and vertices
Refer to Q3 of Ex 10a (pg 184)
c) Line Symmetry and Point Symmetry (pg 185)
Able to identify as well as draw these symmetries are crucial. Ex 10c is a good source for revisions.

Chapter 11:
a) Protractor (pg 190) – Remember to bring your PROTRACTOR for the final exam!!!
You must be able to measure angles using protractor. It is equally important to know how to construct angles and shapes (basically triangle) using protractor. Ex 11b (pg 191) is good for revision.
b) Different Kinds of Angles (pg 192)
Know how they are called and what they represent is very important. Rev Ex 11d (pg 197) is crucial for good revision. Spend a bit more time on Q10.
c) Analogue Clock Face for calculating angles (pg 194 and Pg 195)
Try working out Q11 to Q15 of Ex 11c (pg 197). Exam questions are rather similar to these.

Chapter 12:
a) Knowing what the following angles represent, their relationships and how to identify them are very important.
- vertically opposite angles (pg 202)
- alternate angles, corresponding angles and interior angles (pg 206)
Able to solve angles in diagram-based questions is crucial. Refer to Q5 and Q6 of Rev Ex 12d (pg 215).
b) Converse of Theorems on Parallel Lines (pg 212)
Knowing how to proof a pair of lines is parallel or otherwise is the main focus here. Ex 12c (pg 214) is a good reference for revision.

Chapter 13:
a) Should know how polygons are named (pg 220)
b) Everything you need to know about triangle for this exam is in pg 221 until pg 228.
Ex 13b (pg 225) and Ex 13c (pg 229) are good for revision.
c) Quadrilaterals (pg 231 and pg 232)
Rework ALL questions in Ex 13d (pg 233) for a thorough revision on quadrilaterals.
d) Interior and Exterior Angles of Polygon (pg 239)
The 5 important formulae are crucial to solve questions in this section. All these formulae should be memorised. Ex 13e (pg 242) is good for revision.
* Q1 of Rev Ex 13f is good to generalise the revision for this chapter. Most questions from this chapter will be diagram-based. However there will be at least one word problem similar to questions from Q13 to Q20 of Rev Ex 13f.

Chapter 14:
a) Unit Conversions (pg 251)
Knowing how these are done is crucial. Be extra careful if it involves unit in areas. Revisit Ex 14b is a good idea for revision.
b) Perimeter (pg 248)
There is nothing fanciful here. Just remember to be careful when summing up the sides for perimeter so that you don’t miss out any.
c) Solving areas for the following shapes.
- Area of Square (pg 251)
- Area of Rectangle (pg 252)
- Area of Parallelogram (pg 254)
- Area of Triangle (pg 257)
- Area of Rhombus and Kite (pg 261)
- Area of Trapezium (pg 262)
Work through each of the following exercises for every shape above as revisions.
d) Area of Irregular shapes (pg 264)
The correct dividing, subtracting or combining of these irregular shapes into recognisable shapes is crucial for solving the areas. Attempt Q1 of Ex 14h (pg 266) and Q2, Q3, Q4 and Q5 of Rev Ex 14i is good to hone the skill needed for this section.

Chapter 15:
a) Ratio (pg 273)
You should know the characteristics of ratio (pg 273) and how to manipulate it especially with continued ratio (pg275). Ex 15a (pg 277) is good for revision.
b) Rates (pg 278)
Questions on rates (Ex 15b – pg 280) and distance travelled (Ex 15c – pg 284) are minimal. However it is good to have an idea on these to handle short and multiple choice questions.
c) Proportion (pg 286)
The following are crucial for this exam.
- Direct proportion (pg 287)
- Inverse proportion (pg 291)
- Proportional distribution (pg 294)
Rev Ex 15h (pg 297) is good for revision.
d) Scales (pg 301)
Scale drawing (pg 301) is taken as educational. Questions are from scale on maps (pg 303) and area scale (pg 303). Work through Ex 15j (pg 306) to prepare for this exam on this section.
